Grasshopper Specialist Group (GSG): Red List of Orthoptera for the Republic of Macedonia

A group of three entomologists, including two members of the IUCN Grasshopper Specialist Group, has set-up a red list of Orthoptera for the Republic of Macedonia. This team is composed of:

Michele Lemonnier-Darcemont, Groupement d'Etudes Entomologiques Mediterranée (GEEM)-France. Specialist of Mediterranean and Balkans Orthoptera. IUCN Specialist Group, IUCN expert Orthoptera and France.

    Vladimir Krpach, Museum of Natural History in Skopje-Republic of Macedonia. He brings to this project his accurate knowledge of the natural environment of this country and its evolution.

  Dragan Chobanov, Institute of Zoology Bulgarian Academy of Sciences to Sofia-Bulgaria. Specialist of Orthoptera with an extensive field experience in the southern Balkans. IUCN Specialist Group Orthoptera.

Located in the middle of the Balkans, this small nation (ca. 26 000 km²) contains a rich and diverse Orthoptera fauna. More than 170 taxa are currently reported from the mountainous territory. Some species are associated with restricted habitats, which are sensitive to environmental disturbances, such as wetlands, high-altitude grasslands, Mediterranean vegetation and steppe habitats.

A better knowledge of the status of these insects is required to identify gaps of knowledge and gaps of conservation activities, but also to develop management plans for their endangered habitats and protect the populations.

A RED list has been done

Saga pedo (Pallas, 1773) is here, at the limit of its distribution range in southern Galicica National Park (Republic of Macedonia), with a small extension on the southern, in the mountain of Triklario in Greece.
